Wood You!? Review of Idée du Désir Handcrafted Wooden Twist Dildo

So... today we're taking a look at something a little different.

If you've been around my pages for a while, you know I review a lot of toys made from silicone, and I also have toys in my collection made of borosilicate glass and of stainless steel. But today we're looking at a handcrafted wooden toy from Sensual Desire, a French artisan company that specializes in luxury wooden pleasure products. They sent this over for review, and I've been spending some time getting to know it.

About Sensual Desire

When I stumbled across Sensual Desire's instagram, I was really excited by the beautiful photos of these unique handmade products. As I read through his website, I was impressed by the philosophy and artistry that goes into making these objects. According to his site, the maker has been a craftsman cabinetmaker for over two decades, and is clearly passionate about his medium, wood, which he describes as "a living, noble material." Hell yeah. He intentionally creates a range of products that are inventive in size and shape, thinking beyond the purely phallic - though he makes items in that vein, too!

First Impressions

So, first off, the toys include simple velvet bags to protect them from scratching or random bumps or scrapes, though this is also beautiful enough you could leave it out for display - I just have bad cats who knock everything down. I love this honey-colored cherry hardwood, and it's very tastefully stamped in gold with the Sensual Desire French logo.

This doesn't feel like a mass-produced toy - because it isn't. They're clearly a luxury product and because they're handcrafted, each one has a slightly unique grain and appearance. In fact right away I am impressed by how intentionally the grain of the wood has been used to accent the form of the object, with the rings round on the ends and coming together along the handle. A really lovely first impression.

Why Wood?

I know the obvious question some people will have right now is:

'Wood? Really?'

Body-safe hardwood toys have actually been around for a long time. Actually - millennia.  When they're properly sealed and finished - as these are - wooden toys are non-porous and can be cleaned much like glass or stainless steel.

Sensual Desire very thoughtfully sent a care guide with these items, which includes the European safety specifications with which these toys comply. Which personally makes me feel pretty good because Europe has quite high safety standards for items for intimate use, relevant to, say, the  United States! The sheet and also explains that they are safe for vaginal and anal use, and may be washed with soap and hot water, as they are also waterproof.

Okay, so it's nice to know wood is a reasonably safe option, but again, why wood? There are a few reasons you might be interested in a wood toy.

You might enjoy the sensual, earthy aesthetics that wood brings to the bedroom. If your sex life involves role playing a fanciful flirty elf, for example, it's easy to see this resting on a shelf in Rivendell for example. More of the horny hippie? No one would blink twice looking at this in your tent. But even if you are as vanilla as they come, natural materials never go out of style.

You might also be interested in the sexual wellness version of "slow fashion" - investing in handmade, harvest to compost products that have a minimal long-term impact on the environment. While I personally find that silicone, glass, and steel are all good choices in that they are inert final materials, my inner tree-hugger is tickled by the idea of very closely hugging the trees. ;)

Finally, perhaps you are a pure hedonist, in which case you might be interested to know that wood has a completely different feel from these other materials. I was personally quite surprised by the feel of these toys. They are very light relative to silicone glass or steel, and very smooth. I also found that while they did not feel cold, they also did not retain body heat the way silicone or steel does, so the sensations while in use were unique.

So whether you're looking for a toy that's also a display piece, reducing your carbon footprint, or just seeking novelty, consider wood!

Experience and Performance

The Twist dildo’s design makes it suitable for partnered play as well as solo use, depending on what you're looking for.

This is a curved double-ended toy made of cherry wood. It has an easy light weight in the hand, elegantly transitioning from the center to each gently-rippled bulb. One end is longer than the other, which gives you a range of size to explore, and the finish is smooth without being slippery.

The design of this toy is so elegant, simple, and effective. I have to admit I was very happily surprised by this toy. On their website, Sensual Desire says this toy was designed to stimulate the G-spot and the P-spot, which are on the anterior sides of their respective cavities - so,  towards the belly from the inside.

Let's say you're using the Twist with a partner. The symmetrical curve makes it natural to hold the object in one position, which puts the gentle ridges of the other end in the anterior position for stimulation of the spot. And it's symmetrical but flipped, so it works this way with either end. It's actually very ergonomic for use with a partner!

Now let's say you're using the Twist with yourself. Again, the curve is such that it naturally nestles into the correct position in your hand, giving your fingers grip on the ridges of this bulb, while positioning the other bulb to have the ridges in the anterior position.

Y'all I am so delighted when a tool is so perfectly designed! Again, it's elegant. You don't have to think about it and it works like an extension of yourself. That's craft!!

And I will say, my partner and I really enjoyed the Twist together. They told me how surprised they were because they often prefer to use their hands, or to only use dildos in a specific way, but that this toy felt freeing, and fun to explore the sensations they could create with different angles and pressures. So as a bottom, it's like, really fun when my top is also having just as much fun as I am, right?

Like that's the dream, the toy brings you together with someone. It's not like I need someone else to hold this, it's, look what we can share together, and create an experience together. And I've  been a professional sex-haver and sex-knower for long enough that to find a product that surprises me in this positive way was truly a delight.

Final Thoughts

I truly love finding unique, beautiful, functional products like this, especially when the craftsmanship is this clearly part of the experience. AI can't make this. A man in France with decades of woodworking experience makes this, and I fucking love that. I think that Sensual Desire is trying to make something that's equal parts pleasure product and artisan object, and is succeeding at doing so.

I would 100% recommend the Twist dildo to individuals and couples seeking novel, body-safe and beautiful toys, and who are willing to invest in the experiences these offer. If you're in the EU, congrats, you will have a painless time ordering the Twist or other products from Sensual Desire. If you are in the US, you will have to pay for international shipping and I guess tariffs? But again, I do think that if you are intrigued and captivated by the experience this offers, it's worth it. (Also, please vote out your bad politicians so that you can pay fewer taxes on dildos!!).
